Football: #2 Mount Union Beats Ohio Northern

ALLIANCE – No. 2 Mount Union turned in an impressive second quarter to cruise past Ohio Northern 63-24 on M-Club Hall of Fame day at Mount Union Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Mount Union quarterbacks combined to throw for five touchdowns. Freshman Braxton Plunk (Plant City, Fla.) had three and senior D'Angelo Fulford (Miramar, Fla.) had two while splitting duty under center.

Fulford finished 14-of-17 for 228 yards while Plunk finished 8-of-10 for 168 yards.

Junior running back Josh Petruccelli (Perry) carried the ball 24 times for 144 yards and scored two touchdowns.

Mount Union receivers Wayne Ruby, Jr. (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Flanagan) and Justin Hill (Circleville) each had over 100 yards. Ruby caught seven passes for 154 yards and two touchdowns while Hill had seven catches for 105 yards and a touchdown.

The Purple Raiders led 7-3 after the first quarter before scoring touchdowns on all five possessions in the second quarter. Plunk threw a pair of touchdowns and had a touchdown pass to move into third place all-time at Mount Union with 119 career touchdowns.

Hill, senior Derrick Harvey, Jr. (Akron/Buchtel) and Ruby, Jr., all caught touchdowns in the second quarter. Sophomore receiver Edwin Reed (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Dr. Krop) caught a touchdown pass in the third quarter.

Mount Union (8-0, 7-0) led 42-3 at halftime.

Freshman running back DeAndre Parker (Crystal River, Fla.) opened the scoring with a 4-yard touchdown run to give Mount Union a 7-0 lead. Ohio Northern (4-4, 4-3) kicked a 49-yard field goal to become the first team to score points in the first quarter against Mount Union this season.

The Purple Raiders dominated the second quarter on both sides of the ball. Mount Union outgained Ohio Northern 139-39 in the quarter and 394-78 for the first half. Senior defensive back Nate Fisette (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill) had an interception for Mount Union.

Ruby made it 56-17 in the fourth quarter with his second touchdown of the game and Parker scored his second touchdown of the game with 5:16 left in the fourth quarter to give Mount Union a 63-24 lead.

Mount Union hosts Muskingum next Saturday afternoon.
