Women's Basketball: Mount Union Drops Heart Breaker at Ohio Northern

ADA, Ohio - The Mount Union women's basketball team fell to Ohio Northern in an Ohio Athletic Conference match-up 58-57 Saturday afternoon at the ONU Sports Center.

The Purple Raiders (5-3, 0-2 OAC) were led by junior Elena Rauhe (Seven Hills / Padua Franciscan) with 15 points and seven rebounds. 

The Polar Bears started the game with a 5-0 run until Rauhe hit a three-pointer to put the Raiders on the board. Senior Hannah Schaefer (Dublin / Dublin Coffman) and junior Brianna Gassman (Minerva) both hit shots to give Mount Union their first lead of the game 7-5. The Raiders finished the quarter with a 12-7 surge to end the period with an 18-12 lead.

In the second quarter, Ohio Northern went on another 5-0 run to cut the Raiders lead 18-17. Mount Union bounced back with a 6-2 run of their own to stretch the lead 24-19. The Polar Bears regained the lead af 27-26 after hitting a three, but was short-lived as Rauhe made a layup to put the Raider back on top 28-27 with 1:15 left to play in the half. 

Ohio Northern started the third quarter grabbing the lead 34-30. Freshman Anika Sweeney (Sylvania / Sylvania Northview) and Gassman hit back-to-back three-pointers to tie the score up 36-36 with 4:22 remaining in the quarter. The Raiders ended the quarter with a 10-7 run taking control 46-43.

Rauhe hit two free-throws in the fourth quarter at the 5:02 mark to give Mount Union their largest lead of the night 57-48. Ohio Northern went on a 8-0 run to cut the Raiders lead to one point with 2:11 left. The Polar Bears hit a jump shot with 13 second left to play to win the game 58-57. 

Mount Union will travel to Wilmington, Ohio for another OAC match-up against Wilmington Saturday, Dec. 14 at 3 p.m.
