Women's Volleyball: Career Highs Lead Mount Union to a 3-0 Weekend

 SELINSGROVE, Pa. - Mount Union women's volleyball team swept the weekend 3-0 at the 14th Annual River Hawk Invitational held at Susquehanna University. 

The Purple Raiders improve their record to 14-3. 

In game one, Mount Union defeated No. 23 Clarkson (N.Y.) (12-3) in a four set match 27-25, 25-17, 22-25, 25-18 Friday night. Junior Madelin DiBease (Perry) recorded a season-high 20 kills to lead the Raiders offensively. Along with DiBease, freshman Katie May (Independece) recorded 27 assists. Defensively, freshman Alyssa Kasaris (North Royalton) lead the way with 22 digs. Mount Union started off the first set with a 9-5 lead. The Golden Knights fought back with 8 lead changes and 9 ties. The last tie was 25-25. Mount Union won the last two points to win the set with a kill from senior Marlee Peck (Homeworth / Marlington) and a service error. Set two picked up right where set one left off. The Raiders and Knights went point for point, until a kill by sophomore Maria Ellesin (Alliance / Marlington) put the Raiders up two. The Raiders built off this momentum and ran away with set two 25-17. Clarkson took an early 13-3 lead to start off set three. Mount Union couldn't recover from the deficet losing this set 25-22. Set four the Raiders started with a 7-0 run. Mount Union never let the Knights come within five point winning the last set 25-18 and match. 

Mount Union continued to game two Saturday morning, defeating Mary Washington (Va.) (5-8) in a five set match 18-25, 25-16, 25-19, 24-26, 15-6. Peck lead the offense with a season-high and career-high 18 kills. Peck was not the only Raider to reach a career-high, freshmen setters Mollie Thomas (Massillon) and Katie May both had a career and season-high 31 assists. Once again, Kasaris lead the team defensively with 19 digs. 

The Raiders defeated DeSales (Pa.) (4-9) in a dominating 3 set match 25-11, 25-13, 25-16. DiBease continued to lead the offensive recording nine digs, along with May who tallied 16 assists. Defensively, Kasaris had 17 digs while Peck protected the net with a season-high five blocks. 

Mount Union continues play Saturday, Sept. 28 with a tri-match at Otterbein against No. 22 Transylvania (Kt.) and No. 12 Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) at 2 and 4:30 p.m.
